Shalmalee Kapse

Data Scientist

Shalmalee is a PhD candidate in her final year studying stellar astrophysics at Macquarie University. She investigates star clusters in the neighbouring galaxies and hunts for chemical signatures in these clusters by analysing big data from the Hubble Space Telescope and ground-based telescopes.

She has extensive experience in data reduction and analytics and has developed classification techniques and machine learning algorithms for pattern recognition in astrophysical data. Before commencing her PhD, she implemented an evolutionary algorithm using a population-based metaheuristic optimization approach to discover a new form of rock at extreme temperatures and pressures inside Earth’s interior.
